| Young People Initiative Project (YPI) |
The NGO Component to address unreached youth segments |
The NGO component of the Young people’s Initiative is supported by UNICEF through Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (APSACS). The project idea flows from the UNICEF comprehensive district package for young people which was formulated with the aim, that, |
“By 2007, all young people (15-24) years old would have accurate knowledge; practice safe behaviors related to HIV-AIDS and gain access to youth friendly services” |
The major focus of the project for the year 2006 is to “Build up the capacity of the four identified NGOs in the target area in 3 districts to prevent the transmission of HIV infections among young and vulnerable population and to facilitate pediatric AIDS care in collaboration with Prevention of Parent to Child Transmission Center, Integrated Counseling and Testing Center and all relevant service providers”. |
As per the Sentinel Surveillance 2005 data by APSACS, Age wise trends of HIV Prevalence among ANC Clinic Attendees shows that 77% of the attendees belong to the age group 20 to 29 years. |
STD attendees - Age Wise distribution of HIV Positive cases – 2005, shows that 46% belong to the age group of 20 to 29 years. |
The above data shows that the target population of YPI project is requires effective intervention to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. This justifies the implementation of YPI programme. |
