| Rayagada Leprosy Eradication Project (RAYLEP) |

In October 2002 a direct project of LEPRA Society was established at Rayagada as Rayagada Leprosy Elimination Project (RAYALEP). At that time the PR was 4/10,000 population. Currently the PR of the district has come down to 0.5/10,000 population. The New Case Detection Rate (NCDR) remains at 1.4/10,000 population. Though the overall district PR has come down to 0.5/10,000 there are two blocks, namely, Kolnara, Padampur and Rayagada Urban where the PR is still 1.2/10,000, 1.1/10,000 and 1.9/10,000 respectively and the New Case Detection Rate (NCDR) for the same are 1.6/10,000,2.1/10,000 and 5.1/10,000 respectively. |

The project started its operations by participating in the National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP) in the district. Specialised services of prevention and correction of deformities and rehabilitation of persons affected by leprosy have been the major interventions. The project then focused its operations towards other health problems like TB, Malaria and HIV/AIDS through community participation in specific areas. The services in TB are to strengthen the community by extending RNTCP services to inaccessible areas of 76 villages covering population of 10,976. The malaria problem is being controlled by preventive measurements in a GP covering 5,467 populations of 11 villages with involvement of the community. The railway platform children are the most vulnerable group of STD HIV/AIDS. Rayagada is one of the railways junctions. The Project is also focusing on improving the health hygiene and lifestyle of the children living in the railway platform. |

| The goal of the project is sustain the health services in Leprosy, TB, Malaria and HIV/AIDS and improving the health status of people living in Rayagada District by the end of 2010. |

The objectives are:
- Improve the physical ability, socio-economic status of productive age group of leprosy-affected disabled persons in 33 villages Improve knowledge on preventive measures and health and hygienic status in malaria
- Reduce the defaulter, failure, relapse cases and access to RNTCP services in inaccessible areas by establishing sputum collection centres in eight blocks
- To ensure 15 Railway street children improve their health, hygienic status and change their lifestyle
- To increase the level of knowledge about STD/HIV/AIDS prevention and encourage safe sex among high-risk groups

| Leprosy: |

| In the beginning of the project 848 new cases were detected and a previous NGO handed over 399 cases. Out of 1247 1161 were cured from the disease, 42 cases were deleted otherwise and 44 cases are now under treatment. At present the PR rate is 0.5/10000, NCDR 1.4, Child rate is 8 per cent FR (Failure Rate) is 40 per cent in project areas. About 133 persons have undergone RCS surgery. They are under post-operative care and regularly given physiotherapy. All have gained more functional ability and have almost normal functioning of limbs. | Information Education and Communication : |

Intensive IEC activities are undertaken both for general mass and target group population of the project area. The activities include 124 Film shows, 17 Exhibitions/Rallies, 160 group meeting/group talks, 49 school education programmes, 8 street plays/cultural programmes, 105 FGD, 106 public meetings, 249 Inter-personal communication, 3625 pamphlets distributed to the public. As a result, 83,453 persons attended these programmes by which voluntary reporting increased. This mass awareness programme reduced stigma to a large extent. |

Socio-economic rehabilitation: |

| As part of socio-economic rehabilitation, efforts are made to mobilise resources from LEPRA Revolving Loan Fund, different Govt. schemes and other sources. Due to this 22 benefitted through LEPRA loan, 247 from Govt. Three clients trained in vocational training, 61 persons have got psychological and trade counselling. |

| Malaria: |
| |
Social mapping was done in 34 villages. A sanitation drive conducted in 11 endemic villages through partners. 89 Villages Health committee conducted meetings on malaria preventive measures in the targeted villages. About 90 mosquito nets were provided in high endemic villages with the efforts of local health providers and 58 households have DDT spray to prevent mosquito incoming. |

| TB & HIV/AIDS: |

| 30 sputum collection centre were established which are functioning with the efforts of peoples participation. 250 condoms were promoted and 1 case referred to VCCTC for check-up. |

Railway platform children programme |
| |
| This project focuses on railway platform children who are vulnerable to STD and HIV. A study conducted revealed children are being forcibly involved in sexual activities. Emphasis is laid on behavioural change communication, socio-economic rehabilitation and improved health seeking behavior. Thee children are also counselled on various aspects. |

So far the project has identified 20 grassroot NGOs/CBOs and 117 working partners who are helping in eye-screening camps, attending disability care clinics and taking part of motivation and counselling on disease specific matters and use of MCR footwear. They are also taking part in other allied programmes on Malaria, TB and HIV/AIDS awareness programmes. A NGO has imparted training to the LEPRA staff and supplied IEC materials on HIV/AIDS. Around 200 mosquito nets have been distributed with the help of another networking NGO. For the railway platform children the railway police, medical officers, station superintendent are providing moral and logistic supports i.e. free medical care supports. PRI members have given financial support of Rs.10, 000/- for supply of MCR footwear to the people of that area.
HIV/AIDS awareness programmess was conducted in collaboration with LEPRA, Red Cross and Govt. Staff are attending health camps, pulse polio and other health observation days organised by Govt. |
