Operational area |
PPTCT out reach programme is being implemented in four Government hospitals in Hyderabad city namely Gandhi General Hospital, Neloufur Hospital, Government Maternity Hospital, Nayapul and Government Maternity Hospital Sultan bazaar and 14 Mandals in Nuzivid, Krishna district. |
Role of LEPRA Society |
LEPRA Society is involved in the recruitment and capacity building of the staff recruited and monitoring the implementation of the project activities. Each project site has a counselor and an outreach team. The outreach team is entrusted to reach out to all the slums, Urban Health Centers, Primary Health Centers, AWCs, NGOs, GOs, SHG members, Union members, and Youth Association members apart from the sensitizing of hospital staff. |

Name – Ms. Hemalatha |
Age - 23 years |

Ms. Hemalatha is the only daughter of Mr. Vasudevara Reddy. At the age of 20 Hemalatha was married off to Mr. R. Venkata Rama Reddy, son of ex MLA (late) Mr. Laxman Reddy. He was an engineer by profession. Mr. Venkat Rama Reddy had various bad habits. He took a dowry of Rs. 8 lakhs from Hemalatha’s Father but was not satisfied. He started harassing Hemalatha and asked for more money from her father. But Hemalatha’s father did not agree to give more money. Mr. Venkat Rama Reddy retaliated to this by asking for divorce from Hemalatha and finally the divorce application was granted by the court. One month after her divorce from her first husband Hemalatha was once again married off to a person named Mr. Ranga Reddy. Her second husband also took a dowry of Rs. 10 lakhs. However the couple led a happy life. The days of their happiness was numbered. After five months of her marriage with Mr. Ranga Reddy, Hemalatha conceived and was asked to take few tests. She tested positive for HIV. But her husband tested negative, this resulted in marital discord and Mr. Ranga Reddy started ill treating his wife. Hemalatha was forced to go back to her father’s place where she gave birth to a girl child. The child tested negative. Hemalatha wanted to go back to her husband Mr. Ranga Reddy, but his family members did not accept her or her child. Instead Mr. Ranga Reddy filed a divorce petition. Mr. Ranga Reddy used his political connections and won the case and the divorce petition was accepted. Hemalatha was shattered. Through some friend of her she came to LEPRA and now working as an outreach worker in one of SPANDANA’s projects and looking after her baby who is 6 months old now. |

Ms. Swaroopa is the fourth child of Mr. Rajayya. She has five other siblings. Swaroopa was married to Mr. Suresh in the year 1997. Mr. Suresh used work in a printing press, and was married once before and had a four year old boy from his previous marriage. He had various bad habits. However he took good care of his wife. Since the time of their marriage Mr. Suresh started suffering from chronic health problems. He was taken to the doctor and was prescribed some tests. But before undergoing any of those tests Mr. Suresh died. He died in the year 2000. Swaroopa went back to her parent’s home. She did not have any health problem at that time. But 2 years later she had some ear problem and was asked to undergo a surgery. She had to undergo few tests before the surgery. She tested positive for HIV. She was shattered and felt that she will not survive for a long time. Her family members also started ill treating her and she felt suicidal. But her second brother Mr. Prakash supported her and decided to take her for treatment. They went to many hospitals but in vain at last they came to Cheyutha (positive people’s network) through a friend of theirs. In Cheyutha they met Ms Priya, the organizer of Cheyutha. Ms. Priya informed them that they can get medicines to prevent rapid progress of HIV to AIDS and also other OIs. The medicines for HIV treatment was given once a month at Gaddiannaram. Swaroopa went to Gaddiannaram and at first felt uncomfortable thinking that she is the only person who is HIV +ve but later when she found out that all were HIV +ve there, she was relaxed and made friends with many of them and looked forward to visit the place every month. Gradually she came to know that the medicines were provided by LEPRA Society and that LEPRA not only provided medicines but also moral and emotional support to the HIV/AIDS infected and affected. With LEPRA’s help and some of her friends Swaroopa got married to Mr. Ravi, who is also HIV positive. She also got a job in LEPRA and is now working as an outreach worker. She is leading a happy married life and is satisfied working for the positive people. |

State AIDS Cell Society was formed on 24th September, 1998 as registered society under Andhra Pradesh (Telangana Area) Public Societies Registration Act, 1350 as not for profit organization as per the directive given by Government of India. The registered office is situated at Directorate of Medical and Health Services campus as per the memorandum of Association. The major objective of Andhra Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (APSACS) is to make people aware of HIV and AIDS to help educate people on the effects, causes and ways to prevent HIV and AIDS. It provides technical support in HIV/AIDS prevention and control to Government and Non Government Organization. Other major objectives include providing community aware ness, especially knowledge attitude and practice of high risk groups, developing health education materials for distribution and adaptation by agencies working in AIDS prevention, channelizing and integrating the activities for Non Governmental Organizations in AIDS prevention. APSACS also aims at promoting safety of blood and blood products and encouraging voluntary blood donation movements, providing facilities and strengthening sexually transmitted diseases services in Government and Private Medical Institutions and practitioners, developing counseling services, organizing social support for management of a HIV/AIDS infected patients. APSACS receives fund from National AIDS Control Organization (NACO), who in turn is supported by various donors/bilateral agencies like World Bank, Department of – (DFID), Global Fund for AIDS, TB, Malaria, USAID, Center Disease Control (CDC), and Clinton Foundation. |
