HIV/AIDS:

LEPRA Society endorses the Code of Good Practice for NGOs responding to HIV/AIDS and promotes the active involvement and leadership of positive people in all interventions against HIV/AIDS. Currently the following activities are covered under the AP regional office:

Key population empowerment:

Working with sex workers and other key populations like MSMs and PLHA was thought very difficult, given the mindset and lack of previous experience. However the experience and achievement in 2005 proved very encouraging and rich in learning. Over 4000 people belonging to key population could access the services and a good number of them could benefit from the intellectual inputs including information on health and response to a more positive attitude by the society. Though the Hyderabad site fieldwork has taken through tough times the impact of the project has been tremendous as indicated by the various initiatives by the key population themselves. The female sex workers in one of their site level meetings resolved to help out innocent girls from getting forced into sex work.

Testing Centres:

The number of testing centres run by the direct projects located in its project area at Adilabad, Vijayawada and Hyderabad, increased from 13 to 17 in 2005. Out of over 22,000 people tested 2514 were confirmed as reactive cases. Appropriate pre test and post test counselling was given in all the cases. The Counselling experience in testing centres also points out to the need of various interventions, documentation and operational research studies. Results from inmates of certain institutions were found worrying and warranting novel interventions.

Malaria:

As a re-emerging major killer disease, malaria has been given due attention in LEPRA Society’s planning of activities. KRISCHIP has successfully promoted personal protection methods against malaria, especially use of impregnated bed nets with community involvement. In ADILEP project area, though awareness generation was taken up widely, major achievement was to organise villagers around the issue of malaria and taking up a comprehensive anti malaria programme assigning responsibilities to persons within the village, by the villagers themselves. Supplementing the activity with other vector control methods like spraying, has visibly reduced mosquito density in the village, as reported by villagers in subsequent health forum meetings.

Eye Care and Disabilities:

LEPRA Society’s experience and expertise in prevention of disabilities and eye care of the leprosy affected is used to serve the others also with similar problems. Though the lead in disability care and prevention started with its Physiotherapy department, now it runs a full fledged and exclusive eye hospital in Orissa and a reconstructive surgery unit in Madhya Pradesh through a local NGO.
Vision centres for screening refractive errors and detection of cataract are run in HYLEP (Hyderabad) and ADILEP (Adilabad) in Andhra Pradesh. Eye camps are organised inn villages in Adilabad district and slums in Hyderabad. Identified cataract cases are referred for operations and necessary corrections. |

Community Health:

Community organisation for various health interventions is a new thrust in LEPRA Society’s activities, the principles of which are applied across all projects. In Krishna district health forums at village level were formed which are taking care of primary health as well as attending to chronic diseases by proper references and linking people to appropriate programmes. There has been remarkable achievement in combating malaria through this approach.
LEPRA Society is a member representative NGO in Government of Andhra Pradesh – Government Order – NGO Coordination committees, AP State Leprosy Society and A P State TB Society and HIV TB Co-infection Coordination Committee.
