BPRC as referral laboratory for culture and DST laboratory (for diagnosis of MDR TB) under DOTS-plus programme (Phase II) of Govt. of AP

Blue Peter Research Center has a well functioning mycobacteriology laboratory handling samples from suspected MDR patients for the past several years. The research conducted by the laboratory on specimen transport and MDR has been published in various national and international journals of public health importance. With its existing facility and expertise, for conducting culture and drug susceptibility (C& DST) tests, the laboratory has been accredited to the Central TB division, GOI, after a successful completion of proficiency tests conducted by TB Research Center, Chennai. Following which, the laboratory is now identified as one of the referral laboratories for C&DST under DOTS-plus programme of Govt. of AP, covering four coastal districts of AP(Krishna, Guntur, East and West Godavari). Sputum specimens from suspected MDR TB patients from these districts would be transported to BPRC, to carry on the required laboratory tests. LEPRA Society enters in to an MOU with State TB society to undertake this collaborative activity. The Director and Microbiologist of BPRC would participate in the DOTS-Plus programme, in the capacity of members of the DOTS-plus state committee.

Formation of a National TB Consortium

LEPRA Society joined hands with other esteemed organisations committed towards working for the control of Tuberculosis to form a National consortium for Tuberculosis on 27 th March 2007.

The partners in this consortium are:

  1. World Vision India
  2. LEPRA Society
  3. ADRA
  4. DFIT
  5. GLRA
  6. PCI
  7. PATH
  8. TB ALERT

The necessity to create the consortium arose on account of the identified need to have Civil Society Partnerships for rapid scaling up of RNTCP; to fill in the critical gaps in the supply side through innovative participation by NGOs and to increase the demand through ACSM (Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilisation). It was planned to align the consortium with National policies so that it could play a catalytic role in the control and treatment of Tuberculosis.
