Koraput is a tribal dominated district of Orissa. The real problem is the lack of awareness among tribal people with regard to HIV/AIDS, RTI/STI information. The transmission within and from these groups drives the epidemic to the general community.
To cope up with the situation Targeted HIV/AIDS Intervention project was launched on 1st July 2006 with target group (FSW, Migrant Labourer, and Truckers). At present the project is targeting 300 female sex workers hailing from Jeypore, Koraput (Damanjodi) and Sunabeda NAC area.
The programmes are being carried out to generate awareness on the modes of transmission and prevention of STDs/HIV and to foster an enabling environment for promoting better health seeking behaviour among the community to ensure sustainable behaviour change towards safe sexual practice |

| Objectives |

| The objective of the project is to reduce the rate of HIV transmission among high risk groups with following specific objective. |

• To change the behavior of high risk groups to safe behavior
• To provide STD treatment services to infected people
• To promote condoms through social marketing & free distribution
• To advocate with different stakeholders on HIV/AIDS issues with focus on its prevention

| As a part of the BCC, the focus was on |
|
• one to one discussion, one to group discussion and focused group discussion among the target groups.
• Identification of STD cases, treatment, follow up and referrals were a part of the activities undertaken in the strategy of STD management.
• Advocacy workshops and networking meetings were organised with different stakeholders like health personnel, labour unions, NGOs and Truck Unions etc, for creating an enabling environment. Community programmes like SHG and Balika Mandal meetings and communication programmes were also organised to increase and empower the community.
• The community mobilisation process also resulted in voluntary reporting for HIV testing including self reported testing by adolescent girls of the town.
• The project facilitated CD4 testing to PLWHA and PLHA. They are also being referred to CCC for care and support.
• Training programmes on HIV/AIDS & RTI/STI, condom demonstration and Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) were organised for peer educators and volunteers of the project.
• Vocational training to FSWs was organised for livelihood support.
• 12 new condom deports were opened in the project area which is being operated voluntarily by the external stakeholders like shop keepers.
• With the help of CBOs and PRI members, 3 HIV testing camps and 16 health camps were also organised in the community. More that 1500 persons reported to the health camps and STD cases were provided the drugs through syndromic management.

Targeted intervention is quite effective in combating the rapid spread of HIV infection among the people of target community as well as general population. The external evaluation conducted by OSACS has appreciated the efforts of the project towards care & support & community empowerment.

| Advocacy with PRIs on HIV/AIDS |
The project specially emphasize on peer education for the behaviour change of target group. Besides this, It also aware the target group through group discussion, leaflets distribution, Wall painting etc. About 3127 one to one discussion & 110 group discussions were held with target group to aware on HIV/AIDS. STD, Service Providers etc. Besides this , it organized advocacy & networking programme with Truck Unions, Labour Contracters, Police Personnels, SHGs, NGOs, Dhaba Owners, Condom Dipo Holders etc. to create an enabling environment as well as to increase the network to prevent the infection (HIV/AIDS) further. It also provides vocational training to target group for financial strengthening. For Community Mobilisation, It conducts Community meeting, street plays, video shows, puppet shows etc. to reduce the stigma, discrimination in the community & to involve the stakeholders in this mass campaign to prevent HIV/AIDS.

| As STIs & HIV/AIDS are very closely linked with each other, so, the project gives it’s priority on STD management. For this, the counsellor does counselling & Syndromic management to STI cases. At the same time, the STI cases are also referred to VCCTC for HIV testing. About 537 STI cases have taken treatment & counselling. Out of those 348 cases are followed up & 108 cases have got their partner treatment. 363 cases are completely cured. Besides this, 341 case are done their HIV testing & 15 cases found HIV positive. The Project also organizes health camps & HIV testing camps in out reach areas to provide health services at their arm’s length. |

It distributes condoms freely to target group and also do social marketing of condoms through traditional & non traditional condom Outlets with visibility to the target community. Condoms also made available with SHGs sothat the target group could access the condoms from dipo holders.
In Koraput district, usually the adolescent girls go for earning & usually they work as daily wage labourers. Due to peer pressure, un awareness about their reproductive health or rights, they involve in high risk practise which makes them more vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. So, to address their psychological need relating to reproductive health, it forms balika mandal with out of school adolescent girls & provides education on Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health Education & also life skills. It has also opened an Information corner to access the information regarding HIV/AIDS for in school or college adolescents. |
