In 2003 we started for working European co-funded project.The main objective is to reduce the transmission of TB and Malaria and achieve Leprosy elimination in the district of Hyderabad.

In 2002 the Government recognized HYLEP as a potential partner for working with them in Revised National Tuberculosis Control program because the project had long experience of working in stigmatized disease like leprosy. With the collaboration of the TB control society the project also manages five designated microscopy centers promoting quality diagnosis and treatment. Involvement of ‘private medical practitioners’ in RNTCP strengthened the program. They participated not only in referrals but also in DOTs treatment.

Total number of TB cases registered -3625     (April 2002 to October 2007)


Operational Research

Encouraged public private partnership for effective management of HIV /AIDS, TB and HIV/TB co infection in collaboration with MAAS (Maharasthra Association of Anthropological Sciences).



The various activities include:

  • Tuberculosis Diagnosis and Treatment.
  • Malaria: Blood smear for malaria parasite
    Referrals, Awareness programs in Vector Control and
    Personal protection methods.
  • Leprosy: early case detection and treatment
  • Prevention of Disabilities and worsening of disabilities services

Malaria

Objective of the activity is reducing incidence, mortality, morbidity of malaria, promotion of personal protection and vector control measures.  Organizing group talks, group meetings, IEC programs, rallies in slums, and education programs in Schools to bring awareness in general public. We are also collecting blood smears in the community for early detection of Malaria and support to the Government to organize various awareness programs and control measures.

HIV/AIDS

Two Voluntary Confidential Counseling and Testing Centers were functioning under HYLEP since December 2003 to July 2007.
The particulars given below (as on July 2007)

Total cases tested:  11943 (M-5522, F-6421)
Total cases Reactive: 2270 (M-1239,F-1031)

Sexually Transmitted Infections Treated: 8188.

World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day is observed on 1st December of every year. One  Week prior to this awareness programs about HIV/AIDS are conducted in slums specially the adolescent group. Competitions like quiz, drawings, paintings, slogans and prizes are distributed on the World AIDS Day.
The field staff of HYLEP also takes part Government Programs regarding HIV/AIDS like family Health Awareness campaigns and AASHA Programs.

   
Eye-care centre

Leprosy is a disease which affects hands, feet and eyes.  We established a eye clinic at project in 2004, for treating eye ailments of leprosy affected persons and general eye problems in marginalized population in the community. HYLEP field staff is educating school children, mothers and slum population about minor eye ailments and preventable blindness. Organizing  free eye checkup camps in the schools and slums, also facilitating cataract operations at recognized eye hospitals.

As on October 2007

1) No of persons undergone for eye testing – 3198 (Project clinic & Slums)
2) No of cataract detected – 148    3) Undergone cataract Surgery – 81
4) No of children examined in Schools – 3595.   5) Low vision detected in school children – 101
6) Diagnosed as Vit A deficiency – 63. 7) No of free Eye checkup camps organized in Slums – 18
8) No of Leprosy effected clients  benefited – 674


In the month of November 2003 we organized Grade II foot mela.  The main objective of this workshop to well equip the Physiotherapists and shoe technicians working in the field of leprosy and educate the patients on the importance of self examination, self management, self reporting and also identify train, supporters of the clients to encourage and practice self care with out inhibition.
First 3days up grading of knowledge and skills for Shoe technicians and Physiotherapists by eminent personalities. The next five days Leprosy affected clients with deformities and their supporters were trained in self care practices ulcer dressing, care and important of special foot wear. They were also given ulcer kits and self care atlas at the end of the program.  Sixty five persons were benefited and follow up is being done till date.
