The Hyderabad Leprosy Eradication Project is the first direct project of LEPRA Society was established in the year 1989, situated in the eastern part of twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, covering a population of five lakhs initially. With time we expanded the geographical area and catered to a population about 21,79,540 in Hyderabad and 2,17,360 in Ranga Reddy district. The project is covering two thirds of Hyderabad city for providing Leprosy services, in the start of the project, mass surveys, School surveys were undertaken to detect the early cases of leprosy. The prevalence rate at the start of the program was 14.2/10,000 population and now it has been brought down to 0.27/10,000 by the end of Oct 2007. The total leprosy cases registered and treated with Multi Drug Therapy are 13734 and the cure rate is 83 %.
Strengthening of community structure is being done by conducting various types of IEC activities like video van shows, magic shows, local talent shows, group’s talks, focus group discussion and exhibitions in the slums, thus raising the awareness levels. We are also observing special days involving communities, other stake holders and prominent personalities, giving wide publicity for the same.
Prevention of disabilities and worsening of disabilities of leprosy clients is done with appropriate physiotherapy and prescribing specialized foot wear made out of Microcellular Rubber (MCR) at the project clinic. This foot wear with tailor made podiatric pads are made by trained shoe technicians at the project foot wear unit.
LEPRA Society Received Best NGO Award from State Government of Andhra Pradesh for the excellent work in Leprosy in Hyderabad District for the year 2003.
