BiHAP was launched on 13th April 2007 at Patna by Mr.Chandra Mohan Raj, Honourable Health Minister, Govt. of Bihar.

 
• The project focuses on developing local and community resourcesin reducing vulnerability and mitigating the impact of some healthchallenges. It will strengthen the capacities of service providers both inthe public and private sectors
• Partnership with 4 NGOs in Begusarai, Munger, Bhagalpur andSamathipur districts targeting population of 3,854,687 in 20 blocks
• Strengthen knowledge, information and resource mobilisation inreducing TB, HIV/AIDS, Leishmaniasis, Malaria and Leprosy Trainingto the community-based organisations, Panchayat Raj institutions andprivate practitioners to improve case detection, referral and access toservices.
 
CHAHA Project
 
'CHAHA “a wish' in Hindi language - Children Affected by HIV/AIDSHealth and Happiness for All is a GFATM funded project. At national level, the project is implemented by three principal recipients one of them being LEPRA Society.
• Programme implementation with six partner NGOs in Hyderabad, Nalgonda, Ranga Reddy, Krishna and Nizamabad districts
• Reduce the HIV morbidity and mortality in adults and children andaddress the impact of HIV on children
• To improve care-and-support services to children living with HIV/AIDS and children affected by HIV/AIDS and enable interventions which keep them with their parents or extended families
 
Empowerment of Women affected by HIV
 
A Project funded by the American India Foundation (AIF) to improve the quality of life of women living with HIV/AIDS and to reduce women's vulnerability to HIV virus
• Activities are aimed at livelihood options (revolving fund, needs based vocational training, etc.), community capacity building and nutritious food habits.
• Organise family get-togethers and strengthening existing and creating new support groups. Outreach workers from key population conduct home visits, provide assistance in accessing services and distribute 'new-born baby kits' to HIV positive mothers.
 
Technical Resource Units for AP and MP
 
International Federation of Leprosy Associations (ILEP) entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of India with effect from 24th October 2007 to 31st March 2012. The support includes
• Provision of a national level DPMR (Disability Prevention and Medical Rehabilitation) consultant and contribution to State Leprosy Officers' Programme Review Meetings
• Strengthening, planning, monitoring and supervision, capacity building at various levels, support to DPMR, operational research and socio-economic rehabilitation and community participation
 
Technical Resource Unit (TRU)
 
Technical Resource Unit (TRU) and Strengthening Referral System (SRS) project started in August covering the entire State as a support to the state NLEP programme & TU Malkangiri became operational in September to combat the Tuberculosis problem in tribal
areas covering three Blocks of the district. Technical Resource Unit (TRU) and Strengthening Referral System (SRS) The ILEP partner organisations agreed to continue their support in Orissa in TRU and SRS project in the 11th plan period (2007-12)
• The Technical Resource Unit at State level and 10 Referral Centres at different strategic locations to cater and facilitate services for all the 30 districts of Orissa have started functioning
• Five Referral Centers are functioning at LEPRA Society projects (Koralep, Junlep, Bolep, BICHP & MICHP), one at GLRA project Puri and four at Govt. institutions (LH&H Cuttack, MKCG Medical College, District hospital, Angul, and District hospital Sundargarh).
• 170 PMWs of 14 districts in DPMR, 215 Medical students and 89 Medical Officers in leprosy are trained. The Referral Centres have started referring patients for surgery cases to RCS centres.
 
Tuberculosis Unit (Supported by DTCS, Malkangiri)
 
LEPRA Society started the tuberculosis unit with effect from 1st September 2007 in
• Three blocks (Khairput, Kudmulgumma, and Korkunda) of Malkangiri district covering a population of about 0.14 million in four designated microscopic centres with coverage of 623 villages
• The project is being supported by District Tuberculosis Control Society, Malkangiri under scheme 5 of NGO involvement in RNTCP
 
Evaluation of MODS at BPRC
 
Rapid diagnosis of Microscopic Observation of Drug Susceptibility testing (MODS): MODS is a microscopy-based test (developed by Dave Moore etal) that has been demonstrated as useful for rapid detection of MDR TB directly from sputum specimens in Lima, Peru. BPRC, in collaboration with PATH, is evaluating its usefulness in the Indian setting.
